Shanghai’s Trendsetting ‘Plaza 353’ Targets China’s Young and Fashion Savvy

Historic landmark is transformed into a mecca of cutting-edge fashion and lifestyle shopping on Shanghai’s Nanjing East Road - the No.1 shopping street in China
(Shanghai, October 16, 2009) – Almost one year after opening, Shanghai’s new-generation shopping mall, Plaza 353 on the city’s famous shopping street Nanjing East Road, has successfully fine tuned its tenant mix to become a leading fashion and lifestyle destination which is attracting China’s influential urban youth market.
Meanwhile, Plaza 353 has been nominated by a jury comprising of top industry leaders for the prestigious MIPIM Asia Awards 2009 in the Best Chinese Project category. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in Hong Kong during the MIPIM Asia 2009, Asia’s premier real estate summit, to be held in November 2009.
The world’s first Plaza 353 is located in the pedestrianised section of Nanjing East Raod which attracts hundreds of thousand of visitors every day. The landmark art deco building which dates back to the 1930s, underwent several years of careful renovation by renowned heritage architects Woods Bagot.
Beyond the distinctive classic art deco façade, Plaza 353’s heritage interiors have been transformed into an exciting shopping and lifestyle experience. Offering 40,000 sq. m. of retail, entertainment and dining, the entire plaza is specifically designed to appeal to fashion savvy 18 to 35 year-olds.
“The success of a shopping mall is totally reliant on how it engages with the local community,” says Chai Khim Goh, General Manager of Plaza 353. “Engaging the fashionable young market and drawing inspiration from the vibrancy of youth culture was paramount in our development of the concept for Plaza 353.”
Based on extensive research into urban youth culture in China by developer Gaw Capital Partners, the Plaza 353 concept decodes modern lifestyle trends across its seven creatively themed retail levels. A finely tuned tenant mix now in place, enables Plaza 353 to incorporate previously unseen design features to engage Gen-Y shoppers through the mediums of music, pop culture and creativity. Careful attention to lighting, ambience and entertainment elevates the experience beyond mere shopping to become a popular hang-out hub for trendy urban youth.
The centerpiece of the plaza atrium is an eye-catching broadcasting studio in a glass capsule suspended in the atrium on the third floor. Inside the strobe-lit ‘fish bowl’, house DJs can be seen mixing up Plaza 353’s music channel, which plays throughout the building with different programs at different hours.
The music studio both entertains customers while they shop, eat and chill-out, and echoes the interaction and real-time creation craved by China’s new shopping generation. Themed retail levels wrap around the central atrium and are naturally lit by a louvered glass roof to create a sense of openness to the whole mall.
Levels one to three of Plaza 353 feature ‘City Vogue’ fashions by trend-setting global brands, including Zara, Guess, Mango, Marlboro Classics, Fila, 2%, Lyle & Scott and Lacoste.
Levels four and five are dedicated to the ‘Urban Lifestyle’, saluting the coolest new Street Fashion and Urban Sporty trends in town. Level four showcases original street fashions and underwear by Chinese designers, while level five gathers outdoors and sports themed shops as well as latest digital and games products, sports products and accessories, including Namjagbarwa Outdoor Sports Store, In Base, Nike, Carrera, Dickies, New Balance and Honey.
Level five also houses 353 Club, designed as a cool urban destination for Plaza 353's young and trendy shoppers and browsers to meet and hang out. The Club also provides digital games, free Internet browsing and functional spaces for informal gatherings.
Levels six and seven of Plaza 353 are reserved for cool dining and family stores. Along with children’s retailers Toys “R” Us and Goodbaby, there are three restaurants and a 600-seat food loft Canteen, with a mix ‘n’ match fusion of international flavours.
Free Wi-fi is beamed throughout the plaza, so shoppers can always stay connected, and an interactive web portal and quarterly trends magazine Be U will enhance exchanges between Plaza 353 and its customer base.
Plaza 353 has become a popular venue for parties such as Halloween, Christmas and a New Year Countdown, as well as for brand launches and joint promotions with partners such as Tissot, Carrera F1 racing games and BMW Mini Cooper.
Plaza 353 regularly invites well known stylists from Shanghai’s M-Salon to give make-up demonstrations highlighting its beauty and cosmetics retail, as well as regular fashion shows and guest appearances by visiting celebrities and artists.
Plaza 353 also collaborates with mainstream media such as the 8 hour live broadcast of a special program to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Shanghai’s Five Star Sports Radio.
Also scheduled are participatory activities, such as star search for a Plaza 353 web movie.
The redevelopment of the historic Plaza 353 building provides a wonderful opportunity to restore the status of this historic landmark with a lively and modern-retro design urban concept mall. The completed restoration is now a dynamic, vibrant and unique attraction on Nanjing East Road that attracts locals and tourists alike. Through its planning, function, quality tenants and distinct mix of historic and modern design elements it contributes positively to the re-establishment of the Nanjing East Road precinct as the premiere retail and entertainment district in China and an international destination for travelers to the City.
Combining the best of new-age technology and cutting-edge retail design, Plaza 353 is a one-stop-centre for urban hipsters to shop, dine and hang out with friends. Following the launch of the Shanghai flagship on Nanjing Road, the concept will be rolled out in other selected cities across China.
These new plazas promise the same inspired mix of 21st-century retail concepts, en vogue design and high-tech creative platforms to engage China’s highly influential youth market – both inside and beyond the plaza walls.

Hong Kong Fine Dining Restaurant CÉPAGE Earns First MICHELIN Star
(Hong Kong, November 27, 2009) Fashionable new gastro-restaurant CÉPAGE in Wanchai's Starstreet has been awarded its first prestigious MICHELIN star in its first year of operation.
The Hong Kong flagship of Singapore’s award-winning Les Amis Group was applauded for "charming" service, "stylish" design and "one of the most impressive wine lists in Hong Kong".
CÉPAGE is honoured with one star in the latest 2010 MICHELIN Guide to Hong Kong and Macau.
MICHELIN commented: "Three floors of stylish design offer the chic diner something special; subtle lighting, crisp linen and Limoges porcelain, but also a relaxed atmosphere. The cuisine is contemporary, with French and Italian to the fore, using fine ingredients from around the world."
Nestled between Wanchai and Central in stylish Starstreet precinct, the restaurant blends old world opulence with cutting edge design. It is inspired by classic European architecture and styled after an 18th century French villa.
CÉPAGE introduces to Hong Kong the same award-winning “blend” of exquisite French-Mediterranean fare, one of the region’s finest wine lists and personalised service that has made Les Amis a Singapore fine dining legend over the past 14 years.
Cuisine is by internationally renowned Chef Thomas Mayr, a veteran of numerous Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy and Germany. Focusing on quality ingredients which complement the local climate and palate, he said: “I keep the dishes relatively simple to let the ingredients speak for themselves.”
CÉPAGE is named after the French wine terminology meaning a “blend of” or “variety of” grapes and houses one of Hong Kong's most celebrated wine cellars, boasting over 2,400 labels and some of the world's most revered vintages.
The international wine list is one of the finest in Asia, hand-picked by Group Director of Operations Randy See, who was voted 'Sommelier of the Year' for three years running at the annual World Gourmet Summit.

Introducing Beijing's new landmark. The iconic Pangu 7 Star Hotel Beijing
(Beijing – November 20, 2009) - Pangu 7 Star Hotel is set to become Beijing’s most luxurious hotel and a remarkable new icon for the Chinese capital
The 234-room Pangu 7 Star Hotel is the Chinese capital’s most privileged address since emperors and empresses occupied the Forbidden City. The opulent hotel combines a prestigious location overlooking the 2008 Beijing Olympic Park, an auspicious East-meets-West design built according to ancient Chinese feng shui principles, and unique services befitting its distinguished international clientele of diplomats, high ranking executives and royalty.
Beijing’s New Axis
Pangu 7 Star Hotel is part of the stunning Pangu Plaza development which will also comprise luxury offices, residences and the flagship stores of the world’s most luxurious brands.
Located on Beijing’s new axis of prestige and power, the complex sits adjacent to the historical central axis that stretches from the Forbidden City to the 2008 Olympic Park, and offers jaw-dropping views over the capital’s new national icons: the ‘Bird’s Nest’ National Stadium and the ‘Water Cube’ Aquatic Centre. The Water Cube is just 180 metres from the hotel and is connected by a Ruyi footbridge over Pangu Gardens. Situated beside Beijing’s Fourth Ring Road, the hotel also enjoys convenient access via new highways to Beijing Capital Airport and all the city’s major attractions.
The iconic and imposing dragon-shaped Pangu Plaza was built by world-renowned Taiwanese architect C.Y. Lee, whose portfolio includes the 508-metre Taipei 101 Tower, the second-tallest building in the world. So important is the Pangu Plaza development to the city of Beijing that local building laws were altered to accommodate the 39,361 sqm structure.
Designed in Lee’s trademark Chinese postmodernist style, the landmark plaza comprises five towers connected by a 411-metre-long Dragon Corridor and supported by 66 square granite columns. Atop each column stands a three-metre dragon carved from five-million-year-old granite and holding a pearl in its mouth. The building’s 191-metre coiling ‘dragon’s head’ houses a 45-floor 5A office tower, the ‘body’ contains luxury residences and a high-end shopping mall and restaurants. Occupying a 21-storey tower, the Pangu 7 Star Hotel is the pinnacle of Pangu Plaza.
East Meets West Design
The Pangu 7 Star Hotel’s interiors were created by Milan-based Italian-Brazilian designer Ricardo Bello Dias. Opulent but welcoming, the design strikes a masterful balance between Chinese classical tradition and contemporary European glamour.
No expense has been spared in the creation of the hotel. The swathes of marble throughout the building are entirely imported from Italy, and often embellished with traditional Chinese motifs hand-engraved by local craftsmen. The contemporary furnishings, lighting and technology were designed by leading global brands such as Baga and include Italian lighting consultants Metis, who work with Bvlgari hotels, luxuriant furnishings from Moroso adorn the restaurants while guest rooms are outfitted with Baker furniture, as featured in the American Presidential White House.
Pangu 7 Star Hotel is also the only hotel to have been granted permission from the Palace Museum to reproduce priceless artworks from the Forbidden City. These Tang, Ming and Qing dynasty masterpieces, by revered names such as Ren Renfa and Yun Bing, were recreated on copper panels in Italy and are visible in all guestrooms and public spaces.
Drenched with natural sunlight, the lobby is dressed in warm golden tones with creamy Italian travertine and yellow dragon carpets that reference the Chinese Imperial colours. Overhead, murals carved from precious rosewood depict scenes from the classic story A Dream of Red Mansions.
To ensure the utmost comfort and privacy for guests, check-in at the Pangu 7 Star Hotel is conducted entirely in the guestrooms.
The hotel boasts 234 guest rooms, including 140 suites, ranging in size from 45 sqm up to a 488 sqm Presidential Suite. Soaring 3.5-metre ceilings heighten the sense of spaciousness, and the rooms are decorated with cream, deep-pile carpets and polished blonde woods. Chinese design influences include vermillion walls, moon-shaped door handles and painted dragon lampshades. On the king sized Sealy mattress beds, 600-thread-count Egyptian cotton bedding by Frette offers an unforgettable night’s sleep.
Enhancing the auspicious feng shui of the rooms, a circular, recessed ceiling feature with molded motifs represents ‘heaven above earth’. A colourful round glass piece leading to the bathroom is engraved with two dragons at play. Each room also features a long, flickering faux fireplace with dramatic marble mantle custom designed by Bello Dias, adding a homely feel to the grandiose rooms.
The spacious bathrooms are equally impressive, featuring hand-sculpted dual washbasins, monsoon rain showers and Ferre and Hermes bath products. A mirror beside the bathtub turns into a TV screen at the flick of a switch, and heated towel racks warm the luxuriant Frette bath towels.
High-tech in-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, a Bose surround sound speaker system and automatic light and curtain controls. Advanced IP phones allow guests to receive messages and even check their hotel bill, and the minibar is stocked with complimentary juices, soft drinks, beer and Evian water. For any other requests, guests can simply summon their personal butler.
Top-end Hotel Facilities
Pangu 7 Star Hotel boasts three signature restaurants and two elegant lounges that are already making their mark on the capital’s dining scene.
Japanese kaiseki restaurant Kaden Minokichi is the first international branch of the 300-year-old Kyoto establishment that once served Japanese emperors. All chefs, staff and ingredients used at this 38-seat tatami styled restaurant hail from Japan. Set menus range from RMB1,800 to 8,000 per person and reservations are a must due to high demand.
Pangu Wenqi Chinese Restaurant offers exquisite private dining across two levels. Diners can choose from 26 individually styled private dining suites decorated in Chinese, British, French, Californian, Thai and Balinese style. The menu highlights prestigious Chiu Chow and Cantonese cuisine, and staff are trained in unobtrusive ‘silent service’.
Auspicious Garden is the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant serving a delectable buffet spread of Asian and Western specialities, plus a stellar dessert selection.
The elegant lobbyside Karma Lounge is a fine place for high teas and evening aperitifs.
Alternatively, guest can sip creative cocktails at the double-storey Happiness Lounge on the 21st floor. One of Beijing’s most scenic drinking venues, the bar offers private enclaves, two alfresco terraces and jaw-dropping views of the 2008 Olympic Stadiums bathed in electric blue light.
High-level meetings and events facilities are conveniently located on the third and fourth floors. Five meeting rooms range in size from 68 sqm to 176 sqm. There are also two ballrooms: the smaller ballroom on the third floor is 738 sqm and can accommodate 400 people. The grand ballroom atop the Dragon Corridor on the fourth floor is 888 sqm, and can seat up to 500 people. Its staggering 15-metre-high ceilings are the highest of any ballroom in Beijing.
For guests to unwind, the hotel offers high-tech TechnoGym fitness facilities and will also offer luxurious spa suites and an indoor pool (currently under development).
Ultimate Beijing Experiences – The Sky Courtyards
For the ultimate luxury Beijing experience, Pangu 7 Star Hotel guests can choose to book Pangu Plaza’s 770 sqm Sky Courtyard. This truly unique residence recreates traditional Chinese courtyard living in an opulent 23rd-floor setting, with private lift access, a rooftop garden and wading pool and an electronically retractable glass roof. The double-storey courtyards are built with antique carved wooden walls from southern China and dressed in magnificent art-infused decor by the founder of Shanghai Tang and the legendary China Club, Sir David Tang. The price tag is a cool one million RMB a night.
Pangu 7 Star Hotel spares no effort to provide extraordinary services to its guest.
Arrangements can be made for guests to be picked up directly from the airport with a private concierge in one of the hotel’s GMC Savanna luxury four-seater van complete with a mini bar, massage chairs and Sony Play Stations. Meanwhile, guests wishing to visit the Olympic Park can enter via the hotel’s Ruyi footbridge and enjoy a tour of the 2008 Olympic Stadiums.
Auspicious Feng Shui
Pangu Plaza and Pangu 7 Star Hotel have been fully designed according to ancient Chinese feng shui principles to bring good fortune and wealth to their inhabitants. Created in the form of a dragon – the most powerful and auspicious animal of the Chinese zodiac – the building’s ‘yang’ dragon is designed to complement the ‘yin’ of Dragon Lake in the adjacent National Forest Park.
Lying just off the capital’s historical central axis that stretches from the Forbidden City, Pangu Plaza is directly north of China’s seat of government at Zhongnanhai and the new National Theatre for the Performing Arts, a corridor known as the ‘Dragon Vein’. The Dragon Vein forms a triangle with Financial Street in the west creating a pyramid of world-class political, economic and social development.
The name Pangu references the creator of heaven and earth in Chinese mythology. The 7 Stars are an allusion to the seven stars of The Plough or The Big Dipper, the auspicious constellation that has guided travellers since ancient times, as well as to the hotel’s unique luxury offerings that extend way beyond the traditional hotel experience.
Pangu 7 Star Hotel is located at 27 Central North 4th Ring Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing 100101, China (tel: 8610 5906 7777, fax: 8610 5906 7799, email: info@panguhotel.com; web: www.panguhotel.com).

HURUN REPORT HONOURS MACAU'S BEST PRESIDENTIAL SUITES
(16 November 2009, Macau) Hurun Report, renowned for its annual “China Rich List” of tycoons, hosted Macau's Best Presidential Suites Awards today at the Grand Hyatt Macau. A third leg, the awards followed the roaring success of the Presidential Awards gala events in Shanghai in June and Beijing in August. Seven five-star hotels, namely the Wynn Macau, Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16, MGM GRAND Macau, Hard Rock Hotel, Crown Towers, Altira Macau and Grand Hyatt Macau were presented with the coveted awards for the special administrative region’s top presidential suites, executive suites, executive club lounges and swimming pools.
The winners were chosen by Hurun Report’s staff following one month of field work and stringent evaluation, using a scorecard which took multiple criteria into account such as location, view, design, amenities and facilities.
“With 2009 marking the 10th anniversary of Macau’s return to the mainland, it is the perfect time to hold the awards,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Report. “Macau has gone from strength to strength over the past decade, overtaking Las Vegas in the process, and its luxury hotel industry has boomed accordingly.”
This year Hurun Report hosted the Presidential Awards events in three cities across China in an attempt to; recognize outstanding luxury hotels; further lift the benchmark of amenities and services of the hospitality industry; enhance unique guests’ experience, thus facilitating and shaping China’s luxury travel market.
China has 825,000 individuals with personal wealth of more than 10 million yuan (GBP 1 million or USD 1.46 million) and 51,000 individuals with more than 100 million yuan, according to the Hurun 2009 Wealth Report. Beijing, Guangdong and Shanghai are home to the lion’s share of the rich, accounting for 48% of millionaires in Mainland China. Beijing tops the list with 143,000 individuals with more than 10 million yuan and 8,800 individuals with more than 100 million yuan. Guangdong Province emerged as second with 137,000, followed Shanghai which boasts 116,000 millionaires.
“Hurun Report's readership covers China's most successful entrepreneurs, who are regular users of the executive suites, lounges and swimming pools, as well as the potential users of the presidential suite," added Rupert Hoogewerf. “Our awards will provide a reliable guidebook for discerning travellers.”

Forbes Travel Guide uses stars to represent levels of quality, including its famous FIVE-STAR AWARD certification. To ensure consistency, the Forbes Travel Guide inspectors make unannounced visits to every rated property. The first visit is the facility inspection which uses a checklist to evaluate cleanliness, physical condition and location. The second visit is for service evaluation based on more than 500 service standards. Standards for Forbes Five Star Award certifications are exact, and few properties meet them. Within the industry, these awards are highly coveted and highly respected.

Through the partnership with Forbes Media LLC, Mobil Travel Guide plans to continue to set the standard and define the category of Five Star hotels, restaurants, and spas in the U.S. and around the world including Hong Kong, Macau and Beijing.
The honors for Hong Kong and Macau were presented last year by Mobil Travel Guide and the Hong Kong Tourism Board at a prestigious ceremony at The Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong on November 6 2008. Key leaders in Hong Kong’s tourism market, including many of the region's top hoteliers and government officials, welcomed the brand to the local market.
This year, all the awards will be announced at the evening event in New York on Monday 9th November.
Those in Hong Kong who wish to be the first to learn which hotels and spas are given four and five star ratings can follow the results via Twitter on www.twitter.com/ForbesInspector. The results will start being announced from 8am Hong Kong time on Tuesday 10th November.
Forbes Travel Guide is poised to become the premier resource for travel information through its relaunched guide series, and new highly interactive website, to be unveiled in the second quarter of 2010.
“We are very excited as we launch this new era, under the Forbes Travel Guide banner. We feel that linking the Star Rating system to the strong luxury brand heritage of Forbes will provide more value to both the consumer and the hospitality industry by identifying the best that hotels, restaurants and spas have to offer around the world,” said Shane O’Flaherty, President and CEO of Forbes Travel Guide. “The new Forbes Travel Guide is committed to the same rigor and discipline of the inspections and ratings process as Mobil Travel Guide has been for the past five decades.”

Relais & Châteaux - Encouraging Business Results
(Hong Kong, November 4, 2009) Although fiscal 2008-2009 was a difficult period for Relais & Châteaux member properties due to the impact of the international crisis, the satisfying results recorded by central reservations during the summer season are encouraging for the forthcoming fiscal year.
A year of action: New communication and commercial strategy
The total revamping of the international Relais & Châteaux Guide, the consolidation of press relationships and a world-wide advertising campaign largely contributed towards raising awareness of the international Relais & Châteaux brand.
Moreover, the Association was able to enhance the competitiveness of its members through its decision in favour of the RedX distribution management system of SynXis which allowed it to markedly improve its performance over last year.
Reservations: increasing numbers
The new Relais & Châteaux central reservation system, which was launched in March, has generated a 24% higher result since its introduction. These positive developments were confirmed during the first quarter of fiscal 2009-2010 (July, August, September) with a consistent rise in the level of activity (+28%) attributable to the strong increase in bed nights (+39%), reservations (+35%) and the average length of stay (+3%).
Rewarded reactivity
After a period of very strong growth between 2004 and the first half year 2008, sales revenues fell by more than 11% in 2008-2009 in an environment marked by a major economic crisis. However, the reactivity and measures taken by Relais & Châteaux allowed it to check this decline.
"Given its proximity to the member properties, the Board of Directors of the Association was able to respond to the crisis: the development of our commercial and communication strategies combined with the exchange and sharing of ideas between our members have enabled us to grow stronger in this adverse climate. According to an internal survey, most of our members forecast positive or stable hotel business activities up to the end of this year", stresses Jaume Tàpies, International President of Relais & Châteaux.
New Call Centres
Relais & Châteaux has seen a huge growth in Asia over the last year, highlighted by the launch of their Chinese website in May, and the launch of the 2nd Edition of the Asia Pacific Guide. Most recently, Relais & Châteaux has added two new call centres to the region allowing access to reservations for Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. These new call centres are in addition to the existing ones in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Sydney. The new call centre details are as follows:
