The Connaught, London’s Legendary Hotel, Unveils ‘The Apartment’

(London, 29 July 2009) -- Uniquely carved entrance doors, as seen at many stately London homes, set the tone for a one of a kind residence, perched high above Carlos Place in the heart of London, as The Connaught opens The Apartment on the top floor of the hotel. Welcoming cosmopolitan travellers from around the world with an eclectic taste in art, culture and literature into a private collector’s home, the David Collins designed space features an array of specifically commissioned artworks and limited edition books. The unveiling of The Apartment marks an important milestone in the £70 million restoration of The Connaught, taking the landmark hotel into the 21st century while preserving its authentic elegance and distinct personality.

The understated palette of heathery blues, rich lavenders and ocean greys is elevated by metallic accents, silk curtains and hand-crafted, artisan elements. From lilac leather lined cabinetry in the dressing room and a bespoke card table, upholstered in navy leather with antiqued brass detailing, to a richly veined custom designed white marble fireplace, The Apartment feels like the home of an urbane, cultured connoisseur. The entrance corridor has been treated as an extension of the living space with a library including an interesting collection of twentieth century novels, unusual art history books and some rare volumes. The Apartment features carefully selected antique and contemporary decorative artworks including ceramic vessels, inspirational architectural black and white photography, and bespoke framed modern textiles sourced from craftsmen and artists all over the world.

The Apartment encompasses a stately, double height sitting-room , crowned by an artisan plaster chandelier by the well-respected sculptor Philippe Anthonioz, reminiscent of that in the Musee Picasso, Paris. The adjacent dining room is created with an exclusive, intimate diner party in mind with walls adorned with specially commissioned art work, giving it the residential touch of a world-traveller’s home. The world-famous Connaught butlers are on hand to arrange a private dinner party, with menus specially designed by two-Michelin star chef Hélène Darroze. Two landscaped decked terraces created by award winning garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith have far reaching views over the rooftops of Mayfair. The master-bedroom, with a four poster bed and delicate silk draping, opens up to a luxurious dressing room, boasting pale lilac leather lined wardrobes and an elegant dressing table designed by David Collins, bedecked with a capsule collection of Guerlain beauty products. A white and grey marble bathroom with stand-alone bathtub and double shower completes the experience for discerning guests. There is an equally beautiful guest bedroom with en suite marble bathroom.

“The Connaught is more than a hotel, it is a home, a familiar refuge, and I intended to create an iconic, unique home from home, eschewing the word penthouse. The Apartment is created for a discerning client: well travelled, informed and with an appreciation of design and the art of living. It is a private place for a chosen few and a very personal design statement,” said David Collins.

With the transformation of Mount Street into one of the world’s most avant-garde retail destinations, The Connaught has established a unique relationship with many of the neighbouring designer shops. Lanvin silk dresses, Balenciaga suede jackets, Christian Louboutin satin heels and Goyard vanity boxes can be placed in the dressing room prior to arrival as part of a couture shopping service.

The Connaught, part of the Maybourne Hotel Group, has recently unveiled a multi-million pound restoration and renovation programme which includes a magnificent redesign of the guest rooms, suites and interiors using some of the world finest designers and craftsmen. Siganture features include Helene Darroze at The Connaught which was recently awarded its first Michelin star only six months after opening. Both The Coburg Bar and David Collins designed Connaught Bar have attracted the stylish set since their opening.

UXUA Casa Hotel - Exclusive Creative Retreat in Brazil for International Jet Set

(Hong Kong, July 28, 2009) -- Asia's jet-set can escape to the ultimate retreat for re-charging creative batteries at a rustic haven opened on Brazil's idyllic Bahia coast.

UXUA (pronounced oo-SHOO-ahh) Casa Hotel is something completely different and inspiring -- a boutique cluster of converted fishermans cottages and eco-structures in a remote 'Garden of Eden' called Trancoso.

Like Goa, Koh Samui and Ibiza, the historic village near the Pataxó Indian reservation has been a hippie mecca since the early 1970’s and is now being discovered by a new generation free spirits: from painters, sculptors, dancers and musicians to international celebrities such as supermodel Naomi Campbell arriving in private jets.

In one of the world's unlikeliest but trendiest holiday destinations, the creative director of fashion label Diesel, Wilbert Das, has developed the unique lodge resort UXUA Casa Hotel.

"I started restoring the Indian-style pousada as a second home, but the project evolved into guest cottages for creative, cosmopolitan people to find inspiration," Wilbert said.

"It is one of the most visually stimulating and relaxing places you can imagine, surrounding creative people in a harmonious and supportive atmosphere, fostering collaboration, humour and fun."

UXUA Casa Hotel (www.uxua.com) is now being promoted internationally as an exclusive "creative retreat to let your imagination run free".

It is situated beside the historic 'Quadrado' grassy square, the town's focal point used mainly for relaxing or impromptu barefoot soccer games, surrounded by bars and boutiques. The hotel is so discreet it is not even signposted.

The nine colourful 1 to 3 bedroom cottages (including a multi-level treehouse made entirely of recycled wood) are nestled around pools in a lush tropical garden of flowers, fruits and towering cocoa and jackfruit trees.

Each casa is uniquely restored and designed with traditional materials and construction methods as a tribute to the region of Bahia and its dynamic people, and can be booked for either self-catering or fully serviced, according to preference.

Décor incorporates architectural mixes from southern Bahian, colonial, and Indian, with antiques and Bahian art as well as hand-made furniture and fixtures and some modernism that nods to Wilbert's work in contemporary fashion and furniture design.

The rustic cluster is complemented by a one-of-a-kind aventurine quartz swimming pool believed to possess "powerful healing qualities", lounge, library, gym, spa, restaurant and beachfront bar-nightclub modeled from grounded fishing boats.

UXUA is essentially a "spectacular immersion in a natural and traditional Bahian environment, delivering an entirely new level of casual luxury in one of Brazil's most enchanting destinations", said Das.

"Nothing beats taking an outdoor shower while watching a hummingbird feeding on tropical flowers right in front of you, or the sight of thousands of stars up in the night sky while sitting in the bath.

"I love that localness. I believe people are becoming more attracted to small-scale holiday resorts, not brands and concepts already familiar to them, and return to a sense of ‘discovery’ travel."

The international Travel + Leisure magazine called Trancoso "one of the strangest and most singularly beautiful places in Brazil", and placed UXUA near the top of a list of the world’s 45 best new hotels of 2009

It wrote: "Like Goa and Ibiza before it, Trancoso would seem to be at the tipping point between high freak and high fashion, hippies and hipsters. Yet despite recent incursions, here the dominant pretension is the lack thereof. Everyone dresses like fishermen.” The magazine also writes of Trancoso and UXUA: “Bahia’s sexiest beach village takes a giant leap forward with this nine-suite gem masterminded by the creative director of Diesel.”

The internationally famous Pirelli Calendar 2010 edition was recently shot by legendary American photographer Terry Richardson at the UXUA Casa Hotel, with the photographer and 11 of the world’s top supermodels all staying at the resort.

The first Montgomerie-branded course in Asia marks the arrival of golf tourism in Vietnam when it officially opens on August 17.

Including an upscale clubhouse, PGA golf academy and 60 luxury villas, the US$45 million project has been developed by Indochina Land, which also built the award-winning Nam Hai resort.

To introduce the new course, The Nam Hai Golf Package offers two nights accommodation and two rounds at The Montgomerie Links, including transportation, green fee and caddie, plus return airport transfers from nearby Danang Airport and daily buffet breakfast.

Weekday prices are US$2,172 for a one-bedroom hotel villa and US$2,226 for a one-bedroom pool villa; whilst weekend prices, which include public holidays, are US$3,043 and US$3,097 respectively. The offer is valid until the end of 2010.

The Nam Hai also offers a three-day golf training program for beginners starting at US$670 per person, including a proficiency certificate, preferential tee times and green fees. A five-day session starts at US$999.

Following the signature style of his flagship courses in Dubai, Ireland and Wales, Colin Montgomerie describes the course as "memorable and challenging...an experience not to be missed".

Peter Ryder, CEO of Indochina Capital, said: “Just as The Nam Hai set a new standard for resort excellence in Vietnam, the Montgomerie Links will do the same for golf. It raises the benchmark for golf tourism in Vietnam."

The course’s general manager, Jon Tomlinson, said: "This remains a young golfing country, so we’ve planned an ongoing schedule of clinics for members and visitors who are new to the game. But the facility has also been created to suit the most sophisticated golfing tastes."

The facility also includes a teaching academy led by certified PGA professionals, capable of training all levels of players through expert one-on-one instruction and video swing analysis techniques. The full program will be implemented by next spring.

The Montgomerie Links complements The Nam Hai's luxury experiences including gourmet dining and pampering at a world renowned spa, along with recreation for all the family ranging from guided tours to World Heritage sites to sunrise fishing with locals, beach BBQs, cocktail parties and movie nights.

Hong Kong, July 20, 2009) – With an unrivalled reputation for conceptualising, developing and operating exclusive and stylish hotels and resorts worldwide, GHM (General Hotels Management) is on a rapid expansion course with no less than nine new properties under development throughout the world.

Lynda Lippin Leads Six-Night Pilates Retreat 'Strength Without Struggle' at Parrot Cay

(Hong Kong, 7 July, 2009) – From 8 to 14 November 2009, COMO Shambhala Retreat at Parrot Cay will be hosting a seven-day, six-night restorative Pilates retreat. This will be led by Parrot Cay’s popular and highly experienced resident Pilates specialist, Lynda Lippin, with the Retreat open to all, including beginners.

The retreat’s theme will be ‘Strength Without Struggle’. It has been planned in response to a growing demand from guests who have had the opportunity to work with Lynda over the past year and half.

Lynda, who is widely respected for her nurturing style, has been practicing and teaching Pilates for over 20 years. She owned and operated award-winning Pilates studios in the US and trains Pilates teachers for the Pilates Physical Mind Institute®. She is also an accomplished fitness trainer, certified by the American Council of Exercise®.

Lynda will individually assess each participant in the first day of the retreat in order to understand specific areas of pain, tension, weakness, or disease in the body. Daily group sessions will be a blend of lecture, discussion and Pilates exercise focused on the major issues within the group. Subjects will include history of Pilates, basic structural anatomy, common injuries and tension patterns, posture, and exercise lessons.

Throughout the retreat week Lynda will also recommend specific COMO Shambhala treatments that will benefit each guest, whether it is a calming COMO Shambhala massage or Reiki session. Guests can dine from a choice of Parrot Cay’s menus, including the healthy and delicious COMO Shambhala cuisine - all designed to complement the rounded physical, mental and spiritual experience.

The Pilates method helps to improve muscle control, endurance and correct posture while enhancing positive body awareness and body confidence. The technique, which improves and changes the body's alignment habits, has a flexibility that works for practitioners of all standards. Pilates is now growing in popularity with men as well as women. Physiotherapists are also now recommending Pilates, if it is correctly taught, as one of the safest forms of exercise available. Pilates can assist the super-fit, help people suffering from pain, restricted joint mobility or even people who are post surgery. It is also ideal for women seeking to get their bodies back after childbirth.

COMO Shambhala believes Pilates should be taught in a way that fully understands each guest’s particular needs. Combined with the holistic approach to eating, exercising and treatments, the client can then experience the alleviation of both physical and emotional stress – a synergistic approach to heal and balance. The relaxing environment of Parrot Cay – a peaceful, private island – ensures this focus is maintained.

Prices for ‘Strength Without Struggle’ start at US$6,026 per person (single occupancy) and US$9,014 (double occupancy) including tax and service charge for six-night accommodation in a Garden Room, full American breakfast daily, lunch and dinner, round-trip airport transfers, 16 hours of group Pilates and one private evaluation session. Claridge’s and Dior celebrate the return of the Glamorous Dressing Table to London

(London, July 3, 2009) - Claridge’s, London’s beloved Mayfair landmark, is partnering with legendary fashion and fragrance house Christian Dior to create an exclusive dressing table service, offering guests all of the beauty essentials en suite necessary for a glamorous night out.

As befits a hotel offering the ultimate in legendary service and timeless deco charm, Claridge’s has just unveiled the new ‘Dior Dressing Table at Claridge’s’ for guests staying in the hotel’s Linley and Claridge’s Suites each of which have exquisite vintage deco dressing tables.

The glamorous ‘Dior Dressing Table at Claridge’s’ offers guests a carefully curated range of timeless accessories, including an elegant cream silk Claridge’s dressing gown personalised with guests initials, high heeled marabou mule slippers and a rose pink cashmere eye mask.

On the dressing table itself, Christian Dior has selected a range of classic Dior fragrances including Miss Dior, Diorella, Diorissimo and Dioressence – Les Classiques created by Dior from 1947 when Christian Dior himself said perfume was an outfit’s “finishing touch.”

The fragrances selected by this legendary fragrance house evoke the heady days of decadent glamour. As an ideal accompaniment for an evening out, Dior has also created a beauty kit of the essentials – the perfect compacts, powders and Dior ruby red lipstick and nail varnish.

In the Hollywood movie images of the 1930’s and 40’s the boudoir is depicted as the epitome of a romantic retreat, and one where the dressing table plays a starring role – an appropriate setting for the leading ladies in diaphanous dressing gowns and high heeled slippers. Where better to recreate this nostalgic interlude than Claridge’s, London’s most glamorous hotel. The new Dior Dressing Table service will create a sanctuary where the art of getting dressed and ready to go out is as important as the night itself.

Commenting on the new initiative Claridge’s General Manager Philippe Leboeuf said “We have identified from our guests a desire to experience some nostalgic escapism and sense a return to bygone glamour. Both Claridge’s and Dior are synonymous with the combination of impeccable heritage, inherent glamour and contemporary thinking.”

Guests staying in the eponymously entitled collection of Claridge’s Suites designed by British furniture and interior design company Linley, can also book the Claridge’s Heaven package including fresh seasonal flowers, a chilled bottle of Champagne on arrival, full English breakfast for two, suite amenities including seasonal fruit and hand-made chocolates and a specially selected gift from the suites royal designer Linley.

Further adding to the experience, a Dressing Table Cocktail menu from Claridge’s Fumoir Bar will be available featuring cocktails from the 1930’s including swizzles, daisies, sours, juleps and pick me ups all from the original recipes and served in Lalique glasses.

Little touches that will enhance the ambience will be a selection of classic works from Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford, novelists of this magical deco era, and a music collection with notable songs from Josephine Baker and Fred Astaire to complete the experience.

The ‘Dior Dressing Table at Claridge’s’ will be available in Linley / Claridge’s suites at an additional price of £300 to the quoted room rate. (The price includes all Four Dior fragrances, beauty gifts – lipstick / nail varnish / powder, personalised silk dressing gown, an Evelyn Waugh book, CD and cocktails from the Fumoir)

Claridge’s Heaven is available until 31st December 2009 and priced from £1450 per night in a one-bedroom Claridge’s Suite.

London is served by daily flights from across the Asia Pacific region and Claridge’s is conveniently located in the elegant heart of Mayfair, Central London. Claridge’s stands on the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street in Mayfair, the most prosperous area of central London and is within easy reach of the open spaces of Hyde Park and excellent shopping on Bond Street and Oxford Street.

The Nam Hai, Central Vietnam, Unveils New Kids Activities Club to Enhance the Ultimate Family Retreatth

(HOI AN, Vietnam, 03 July 2009) — The Nam Hai has already gained worldwide renown for its architecture and is now putting the final touches on a structure to astound children.

The Nam Hai, which last year won ‘World’s Best Resort’ in Travel + Leisure’s annual Design Awards competition, draws the curtains back on a kids-only, 100-square-meter play villa on July 13.

With silk lanterns, terracotta flooring, timber columns and a pitched roof of flat tiles, the Activities Club was built and styled to look like an ancient Hue garden house. Inside, however, children can expect to find things they know and love — foosball and ping pong tables, big-screen TV movies, books, puzzles, board and video games, arts and crafts.

“It will have everything our youngest guests could want in a play area,” said Herbert Laubichler-Pichler, the resort’s General Manager. “But it’s just a small part of what the Activities Club will offer.”

Recreational consultant Ryan Ford has created daily programs — for 4 to 6 year-olds and 7 to 12 year-olds — that start and end at the facility, but in between take in beach excursions, sporting competitions and swimming pool games under the supervision of qualified hotel staff.

Depending on day of the week, the older group also gets to participate in afternoon treasure hunting, baking and cooking, kite making, Vietnamese language and art learning or water balloon fighting.

“We want kids to have fun, but we want them to do it in the context of interacting with other children and having cultural experiences,” said Ford. “These itineraries are dynamic. We’ve even incorporated ‘surprise visits’ to places like the kitchen, so they can see how our F&B team works together to prepare their lunches.”

The Nam Hai, which is owned by Indochina Capital and operated by GHM, offers upscale luxury accommodation never before seen on the East Sea. The villas were modeled on the traditional residences of central Vietnam, known as nha ruong, but they have been creatively re-interpreted to accommodate modern technologies and amenities.

Activities Club registration is from 8 a.m. until 8:20 a.m. daily. Programs for both age groups conclude at 6 p.m. Set lunches are also available.

To coincide with the opening of the Activities Club, The Nam Hai is offering a ‘Family Summer Retreat’ featuring guided tours at World Heritage sites, sunrise fishing with locals, beach BBQs, sporting activities, cocktail parties and movie nights.

For more information about the Activities Club or ‘Family Summer Retreat’, call The Nam Hai on (84) 510 394 0000, email fom@thenamhai.com, or visit www.ghmhotels.com.

The Aquarium by KEE At Alfred Dunhill - Plaza 66, Shanghai

(Shanghai, 30 June 2009) KEE, the exclusive private members club, with venues in Hong Kong and Shanghai announces the opening of its first concept bar & lounge, The Aquarium by KEE for Alfred Dunhill at Plaza 66, Shanghai. With the success of the Aquarium at the Alfred Dunhill 3-storey flagship store in Ginza Tokyo, KEE was invited to conceptualize and operate dunhill’s Aquarium Bar at their new flagship store at Plaza 66.

The name Aquarium comes from dunhill’s iconic Aquarium lighter and the venue reflects a 1970’s James Bond style - Postmodern club with aged leather furniture, Persian rugs, oak & croc paneling and polished brass. The bar itself was modeled after the legendary “American Bar” by Alfred Loos in 1908 in Vienna.

The ambience of the lounge is British gentry, with modelesque staff in stylish silk black tie outfits. It feels and smells like cigars and martinis. Entering this subterranean realm of male bespoke luxury conveys a subtle sexiness like transgressing an invisible border. (One actually enters the bar by passing through the ground floor shop, down two stylish staircases with a view into this very warm lounge. One almost expects Emma Peel or John Steed to come round the corner).

Designed by architect Gavin Tu in collaboration with the founder of KEE, Christian Rhomberg, the interiors are cosy with KEE style edgy touches - aged leather and vintage furniture, intimate subtle lighting from floor lamps with rich warm lampshades, palms and ferns, Persian carpets and a signature aroma chosen from the dunhill range of perfumes. A good selection of quality books and international magazines add to the ambience.

The Aquarium is positioned as an upmarket, exclusive private dunhill den with a distinctively ‘men’s only club’ feeling - targeting not only male business and social customers, but with the right marketing, also female customers who are likely to be intrigued and attracted by the idea of being able to enter what is perceived as a male bastion.

The Bar is the perfect all-day dining venue for breakfast meetings, or a light lunch from its appetizing Continental menu, or guests can simply enjoy having afternoon tea or relaxing over a drink from the extensive beverage list featuring 46 premium whiskies, classic and contemporary cocktails and an excellent choice of champagnes and wines by the glass. A wide selection of canapés is also available during happy hour.

The Aquarium by KEE: Alfred Dunhill, Plaza 66, Unit 111A, 1266 Nanjing Road West, Shanghai. Reservations: (86-21) 6288 3822.
