One&Only Spa Cape Town to Open 3 April
The superior spa experience associated with One&Only Resorts will be taken to the next level with the forthcoming launch of the much anticipated One&Only Spa Cape Town on 3 April.
Located on its very own private island at the heart of One&Only Cape Town, lies an exclusive, unparalleled spa retreat. An oasis of serenity surrounded by water and lush vegetation, One&Only Spa Cape Town offers tailored holistic experiences, ranging from pure relaxation to unique and signature wellness ‘journeys’.
With soothing therapies and calming rituals, One&Only Spa Cape Town has created a carefully considered environment for total wellbeing and is a true reflection of today’s modern spa. Defining personal service and quiet indulgence, the spa embraces local African influences and combines this with contemporary design. Run by the award-winning ESPA brand, One&Only Spa encompasses no less than 12 treatment rooms many of which have pitched roofs, highlighting the lofty spaciousness of the suites and giving a distinctly African feel through the extensive use of natural wood. Private wet areas for both single and couples treatments will be offered in two of the treatment suites.
Two vitality pools with air massage recliners, naturally-lit sauna and aroma-steam rooms, and ‘experience’ showers with three different kinds of water settings complement the relaxation spaces. A hair salon, two beauty suites and the celebrated Bastien Gonzalez pedicure and manicure studios - with three dedicated rooms - provide additional facilities.
The beautifully landscaped spa gardens will enhance the tranquillity of the spa with integrated seating areas allowing guests to relax fully whilst being surrounded by unique sculptures from the African continent. Designed by Bangkok-based landscape designer, Bensley Design, which also designed the lush gardens of award-winning One&Only Reethi Rah and One&Only Le Saint Géran, the gardens will lead to the peaceful Chi Studio yoga pavilion offering one to one, couple sessions and classes for different levels involving beautiful, calming sequences of postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama) and relaxation of body tension.
Based on One&Only’s innovative ‘Unwind, Balance and Uplift’ spa philosophy, One&Only Spa Cape Town will offer tailored treatment plans, making use of powerful authentic techniques, indigenous ingredients and highly natural, paraben-free products produced by ESPA, all tailored to restoring natural equilibrium. These holistic spa experiences will range from deep relaxation to energising revitalisation with every treatment offered by the Spa centred on one of the three philosophies:
• Unwind – this programme will calm the mind and nerves, easing muscle tension to achieve a sense of deep relaxation and peace. Activities include a variety of spa treatments, meditation, nutrition and yoga.
• Balance - designed to cleanse and purify both mind and body, restoring the body’s natural equilibrium. The full menu of spa treatments is complemented by exercise such as cardiovascular fitness and cleansing nutrition.
• Uplift – this programme can be experienced through body massage, facial treatments, Thai Chi and energising nutrition. Focus is given to pressure points and energy centres of the body resulting in a sense of wellbeing and vitality.
Highly qualified therapists – all from South Africa and intensively trained by ESPA on site for a minimum of eight weeks - will recommend the programme most suited to the guest. Alternatively guests can purchase a block of Spa Time, during which they will be guided through their ‘journey’ of treatments and rituals most suited to their needs. For those looking for complete escapism, One&Only Spa Cape Town offers Private Spa Suites which can be reserved for a minimum of three and a half hours. Couples can enjoy the soaking bath for two, steam shower and side by side treatments.
Treatments, as well as design, at One&Only Spa Cape Town reflect the African environment. Inspired by local Bushmen who relied on seashore provisions, the One&Only Cape Town Essence of Earth and Ocean Experience makes use of indigenous African ingredients. Local sea salt exfoliates whilst Baobab Tree Oil is used to massage and a re-mineralizing South African seaweed wrap provides conditioning effects. Offering 120 minutes of pure therapy, it is the definitive indigenous Signature treatment on the menu.
A 350 square-metre free-form, infinity-edge pool is located on the island and offers guests sitting areas with double chaise longues, ideal for sunbathing or relaxing under shaded pavilions.
For the more active, the resort’s Marina Rise is home to the 200-square metre One&Only Fitness Centre, featuring state-of-the-art fitness equipment from Technogym®. Offering personalised workout programmes developed for the individual needs of guests and residents and linked with the five other One&Only resorts and gyms using Technogym® equipment, guests can follow the same programme wherever they are. The programme will also be fully integrated with specific spa treatments and nutritional advice. A dedicated Kinesis training room offers tri-dimensional pulley system training and there are additional studios for yoga, pilates and tai chi. The resort’s Kick-Start Fitness Package offers guests access to a 60-minute health and fitness analysis, two personal training sessions, aqua and swimming training and a choice of either an Uplift massage, Sports massage or Swedish massage.
The health and wellbeing of youths aged 3-12years and teenagers is an area where One&Only Cape Town is committed to; by helping parents establish a healthy foundation of exercise and proper nutrition for their children. Swimming lessons are divided into three swimming levels, Starfish, Octopus, and Dolphin, and offer a set of criteria and requirements to achieve during the child’s stay at the resort. The resort’s boxing program is designed to help children and teenagers become fitter and to promote an active lifestyle, while Personal Training is offered to teenagers over 16 in the Fitness Centre.

HBA to Design Asia’s First Waldorf Astoria
HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates, designers of the prestigious new Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai, are set to revive a second landmark heritage property on the city’s iconic Bund waterfront.
The world’s leading hospitality design consultancy has been appointed by Hilton Hotels Corporation to transform the former Shanghai Club at No. 2 The Bund into the Waldorf Astoria On The Bund Shanghai.
Set to open in 2011, the Waldorf Astoria On The Bund Shanghai will be the first hotel in Asia for Hilton’s prestigious luxury brand. HBA was the obvious candidate for the high-profile project on account of its unrivalled experience in preservation and adaptation of landmark hotels around the world.
HBA has its own history of augmenting new brands within global hotel groups and in the past have delivered classic restoration designs in New York, Paris, Chicago, Athens and other gateway cities. HBA’s signature design elegance and timeless grace, uniquely adapted for today’s luxury travelers, is a perfect fit for the legendary Waldorf Astoria brand.
According to HBA Principal, Ian Carr, “Restoring or converting these properties, such as is the quest for the Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai is a true labor of love for the design team, the ultimate challenge of taking the historical context and adding the up-to-date convenience and style of current expectations. The hotel, when completed, will become a bellwether property for this high-end emerging brand.”
The exquisite English Renaissance style building was constructed in 1911 and opened as the now-legendary Shanghai Club. Throughout the city’s 1920s and ‘30s Pearl of the Orient heyday, it was Shanghai’s most exclusive gentleman’s club, filled with decadent delights like bowling alleys, restaurants, an oyster bar, games rooms, a barber’s shop and two wine cellars. One of the highlights was its celebrated Long Bar – which at 110 feet was once the longest bar in the world.
Still one of the finest architectural gems along Shanghai’s waterfront promenade, the whitewashed façade is adorned with Palladium columns, intricate gables and a pair of sculpted rooftop cupolas. The interiors – including the original Sicilian marble columns and stained glass imported from Birmingham, England – will be painstakingly restored through extensive use of archived photographs and records.
HBA’s renovation of this historic pleasure palace will continue the Shanghai Club’s legacy of refined indulgence, while equipping the building with the luxury amenities demanded by today’s discerning traveller. The new hotel will comprise 266 rooms across two buildings. The charming heritage building will be connected via a courtyard to a modern tower bordered by Sichuan Road. HBA’s design will encompass both buildings, including all the guestrooms, four restaurants, two bars, a patisserie, lobby lounge, extensive banqueting facilities, a swimming pool, health club and spa.
The Waldorf Astoria brand builds on the traditions established by the original Waldorf Astoria in New York, defining the ultimate in hospitality luxury and encapsulating the core values of being legendary, timeless and cultured. Hilton Hotels Corporation is developing Waldorf Astoria hotels and residences in key cities around the world, including Florida (2009), Sarasota (2010), Shanghai (2011), Montreal (2011), Beverly Hills (2011) and Philadelphia (2012).
The Waldorf Astoria On The Bund will revive a much-loved Shanghai institution. Like its cherished predecessor, the Shanghai Club, it will capture the spirit of 1930s Shanghai and become a bastion of civility and style for the refined modern traveller.
HBA: Global Leaders in Historic Restorations
An international leader in historical preservation and adaptation in the hospitality design industry, HBA has worked on several of the world’s oldest and most prized hotels to ensure the quality and relevance of the restoration works.
In 2003, HBA restored the Hotel Grande Bretagne Athens in Greece, which was first opened in 1874. An ambitious preservation and refurbishment programme saw the addition of state-of-the-art facilities, swimming pools, restaurants, a spa, Grand Ballroom, plus meetings and conference rooms. The interior design blended French and Italian neoclassical furniture, taking cues from photographs of the hotel taken in the late 19th century. The detailing throughout was inspired by the original 1843 palace, which featured fluted columns, ionic capitals and mosaic floors.
The St. Regis Grand Rome originally opened in 1894 as Rome’s first deluxe hotel. After an extensive restoration and renovation by HBA in 1999, the hotel reclaimed its status as the finest hotel in Rome – and one of the best in the world. This honor was re-emphasized when the restored hotel was named on theCondé Nast Traveler's prestigious 2005 Gold List.
Westin Europa & Regina located in Venice, Italy consists of five historic buildings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. HBA was appointed in 1997 by Starwood Hotels & Resorts to restore the historical buildings, maintaining the hotel’s traditional beauty while offering contemporary conveniences. It was also named on the Condé Nast Traveler’s 2005 Gold List.
One of the world’s most famous hotels, the Beverly Hills Hotel was built in 1912. This epitome of luxury was recreated by HBA in 1995, providing opulence and tranquility in a truly residential setting. Likewise, Hilton Chicago, one of the city’s grandest dames, was restored to its full glory in 1985.

Continued demand for luxury travel makes attendance at Asia Luxury Travel Market (ALTM) 2009 more important than ever
(Shanghai, February 20, 2009) – Now in its third year, Asia Luxury Travel Market (ALTM), the region’s first annual event dedicated to the luxury travel industry, is expecting strong attendance at this year’s event in Shanghai in June.
Exhibitors are finding the show more relevant than ever in the current economic climate and not just because of the pressure to make their marketing efforts more effective.
“This will be Silversea's third year of participation at ALTM. The event is a proven platform to showcase our product to a highly targeted audience,” said Mr. Steve Odell, Senior Vice President, Silversea Cruises. “With the difficult economic climate it’s even more important to be highly visible, especially as the Asian markets are proving more resilient than others around the world," he added.
ALTM is being held at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre from 15-18 June 2009, and brings the most important travel buyers from the Asia Pacific region face to face with the worlds most sought after destinations, ultra-luxurious accommodation, elite transportation and unique travel experiences.
“We have been to many trade shows, and still find ALTM one of the better shows that best represents luxury lifestyle brands with relevant networking opportunities. It's not all glitz but serious business connections have been initiated and developed in the last two years since ALTM started in this region,” said Ms Crystal Seah, Director Marketing Communications, COMO Hotels and Resorts. “In this day of global economic challenges, we have to be even more strategic in our sales efforts and marketing resources, that is why COMO Hotels and Resorts have opted to return and make this event work harder for us in securing successful partnerships.”
According to PATA’S Travel Monitor, despite the gloomy global economic outlook, individual source markets to specific inter-regional destinations are continuing to experience growth – one such example is Thailand to Macau. They quantify Asia as a region that accounts for half of the USD80 billion luxury travel industry and is home to over 2.3 millions individuals with a net worth of over USD1million.
MasterCard Insights for Asia Pacific suggest the demand for luxury travel and leisure will continue to make up a large proportion of consumers spending between 2006 and 2016, beaten only by the clothing and personal accessories category.
“ALTM is key for our company as the meeting place for important business connections. Despite the expected sluggish market this year, we feel that luxury tours will remain strong and it’s important to continue to provide new products for this sector” said Mr. Yap Fu Fuh, Managing Director, Parlo Tours
ALTM is the sister event of the highly successful International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM) held annually in Cannes, France now entering its eighth year.
“The luxury travel market is our main target with the majority of our clients coming from China and Hong Kong so ALTM seems like the perfect fit. Our clients are constantly on the look out for what is new, unique and ‘luxury’ making attendance at ALTM vital for us” said Mr. George Kai, Deputy General Manager, China Travel Service.
Exhibitors already committed for ALTM 2009 include Silversea Cruises, COMO Hotels and Resorts, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Jumeirah Hotels, Sina Fine Italian Hotels, Peninsula Hotels, Conde Nast Johansens, Six Senses Resorts & Spas, Design Hotels, Prestige Hotels of the World, Switzerland Tourism, Government of Dubai, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Zacchera Hotels, The Villa Book Ltd., Hunt & Palmer Plc, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, Intercontinental Hotel Group, Orient-Express Hotels Trains and Cruises, Fairmont Raffles Swissotel Hotels and Resorts, Twinpalms Phuket and Shanghai Zendai Himalayas Real Estate.
ALTM is organised by Reed Travel Exhibitions.

Hotel group Marriott International said Monday it was planning to open 57 new hotels in Asia over the next four years, mainly targeting the Chinese and Indian markets.
Despite the global economic slowdown, the company said it was planning to open 21 new hotels in China, 24 in India and eight in Thailand.
The new hotels would create 15,000 new jobs in eight Asian countries, the company said in a statement.
"China, India and Thailand have demonstrated significant strength in recent years," said Ed Fuller, president and managing director for international lodging at the US-listed firm.
Marriott, which operates JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and Renaissance brands, currently operates 109 hotels in 13 countries across the region.
Among its new projects is its first property in the Maldives and the first JW Marriott branded resort in Vietnam.

Fine Dining Restaurant CÉPAGE Now Open on Hong Kong’s Starstreet
The much awaited CÉPAGE by Singapore’s award-winning Les Amis Group officially opens its doors to Hong Kong today with grand opening celebrations.
CÉPAGE is named after the French wine terminology meaning a “blend of” or “variety of” grapes. CÉPAGE will bring to Hong Kong the same award-winning “blend” of exquisite French-Mediterranean fare, one of the region’s finest wine lists and personalised service, as has made Les Amis Singapore’s most legendary fine dining restaurant for the past 14 years.
Located on the stylish Starstreet, CÉPAGE is spread over three stunning levels - blending old world opulence with cutting edge design. Adding the perfect final touch is an elegant rooftop bar providing guests the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. The façade wows guests upon arrival, boasting floor to ceiling windows on each level affording a glimpse into the elegant interiors created by Kay Ngee Tan Architects in a renovation costing over HK$14 million.
Drawing inspiration from classic European architecture, Tan modelled the design of CÉPAGE on 18th Century French villas with a modern touch throughout, using attention grabbing art works by Mao Tong Qiang.
Guests are greeted with a grand floor-to-ceiling back-lit onyx marble wall leading into the plush bar area. The bar is cosy and welcoming, seating merely 13 guests, and is set to be one of Hong Kong’s exclusive places to enjoy the best wines in town. Traditional ‘Chester’ style armchairs in warm hues of burgundy velvet fabric set the scene, encouraging guests to indulge in a fine vintage. The highlight of the bar is the dramatic red wine cellar finished with timber panelling evoking a sense of history.
The main dining hall, seating 42 guests, is on the first level and features timber arches complementing the glass façade, each embellished with 100 year old antique chandeliers hand picked and specially flown in from Europe. The first level also features two private dining rooms seating 4 and 6 guests and a sleek white wine cellar.
Attention to every detail is evident at CÉPAGE from the traditional ceiling panels, to the roses and glassware. The finest linen napkins, Cocquet crockery, First Series glasses and Laguiole knives are all used to enhance the dining experience.
Occupying the entire third level is an exclusive private dining room perfect for up to 14 guests. The eye is immediately drawn to a regal chandelier above the dining table at the centre of the room. Luxe wallpaper and an L shape wall panel adds a theatrical finishing touch.
At the helm of CÉPAGE will be the same award-winning team that has assured the success of its Singapore counterpart. Resident Chef Thomas Mayr promises light and contemporary dishes, focusing on quality ingredients which complement the local climate and palate. Director of Operations Randy See, voted Sommelier of the Year at the annual World Gourmet Summit for three consecutive years, will also be overseeing the team in Hong Kong, assuring great service, cuisine, attention to every detail and a truly cultural experience.
Chef Mayr, who has worked his way through the ranks of numerous Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy and Germany, takes his sumptuous offerings to a new level using the freshest quality ingredients from the best sources worldwide. “I keep the dishes relatively simple to let the ingredients speak for themselves,” says Mayr.
Mayr’s A la carte menu combines the classics with the new. Les Amis Singapore classics remain on the menu such as Cold angelhair pasta with Aquitaine Caviar, Japanese kombu and white truffle oil (HK$250); Wild mushroom risotto, pan seared foie gras and langoustine (HK$230) and Celeriac and Japanese organic egg yolk ravioli, truffle jus with seasonal mushrooms (HK$220). Whilst new delicacies grace the menu such as Carpaccio of live Scottish diver scallop, citrus fruits and Iranian Beluga caviar (HK$540); Angel hair, Alaskan crab, chilli Nduja de Monte Poro with lobster oil (HK$340) and Pyrenean milk-fed lamb rack, eggplant caviar, roasted pearl onion, cherry tomato confit (HK$620).
A set lunch menu allows guests to sample the delicious menu at great prices: HK$290 for two courses and HK$360 for three courses. For those willing to go the whole nine yards, a Gourmand Lunch menu is available (HK$460) comprising of a four course tasting menu. A Menu Degustation (HK$1320) treats guests to a seven course taster of the best CÉPAGE has to offer.
CÉPAGE also boasts the BEST wine collection in the city, comprising over 2,100 wine labels with competitive prices, in a spacious, temperature-controlled cellar. The emphasis on wine pairing means that food can be tailored to the chosen wine, and of course the other way round.
Situated in the up-and-coming Starstreet in Wanchai, and still only a stone’s throw from Central and Causeway Bay, CÉPAGE provides a secluded hideaway for connoisseurs of fine food and wine in the heart of town.

Parrot Cay Secures Reputation among Worldclass Yoga Teachers with Three New Retreats for the Year Ahead
Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos attracts some of the world’s leading Yoga teachers. In 2009, the line¬up has never looked stronger with Rodney Yee, Colleen Saidman Yee and Erich Schiffmann all returning, and teacher Elena Brower joining the schedule for the first time.
This ability to draw in the best instruction has much to do with the commitment Parrot Cay shows towards all teachers and students – the exceptional Yoga facilities at the private island resort’s COMO Shambhala Retreat, the healthful COMO Shambhala Cuisine, the range of holistic treatments which so meaningfully complement a student’s focused Yoga practice, and the calibre of Parrot Cay’s beach¬-style accommodation. During the five¬-day retreats, students are invited to engage in up to four¬ and¬ a¬ half to five hours of Yoga daily, allowing for the space and inspiration which does not easily exist in home environments. The simplicity of each day lets students empty their mind of all other concerns, for at Parrot Cay, seamless service and attention to detail ensures students can focus on the reason for coming to this uniquely soulful place: to learn Yoga for the first time, or to deepen their existing practice.
The year’s schedule opens with Rodney and Colleen Saidman Yee’s Retreat from 19th to 25th April. Entitled ‘Moving from Conflict Toward Peace: An Exploration of Asana, Pranayama, Meditation, and Chanting’, Rodney and Colleen will invite students to take a vacation from the mind’s chatter. Using the tools of observation, vibration and movement – plus hard work and some rock and roll music – sessions will focus on specific alignment and sequencing for standing poses, hip openers, twists, and backbends.
The principles of alignment will then be brought into a flow class where the focus will be on receptivity and the body’s natural wisdom as preparation for pranayama and meditation.
With a shared passion and commitment to Yoga, Rodney and Colleen have been practicing together for years and were married in December 2006. Together they created and present the online Gaiam Yoga Club (www.gaiamyogaclub.com), and they are the Yoga Directors of the Health and Wellness Initiative of Donna Karan's Urban Zen Foundation (www.urbanzen.org). In addition, Rodney is a member of the Board of Advisors for COMO Shambhala. He was a co¬founder (and former owner/director) of Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland, California, and is the author of Yoga: The Poetry of the Body and Moving Toward Balance. Colleen, originally certified in the 800¬-hour Jivamukti Teacher Training Program, opened the hip Yoga Shanti studio in Sag Harbor, New York, in 1999.
Like Rodney and Colleen, Erich Schiffmann, normally based out of Los Angeles, remains one of Parrot Cay’s most frequent visitors – a teacher who recognises the unique potential of a retreat held at this resort and the focus it allows students. From 31st May to 6th June, he will be leading ‘The Essentials of Freedom¬Style Yoga’. Sessions will reflect Erich’s unique Freedom ¬Style Yoga – an intuitive approach to Yoga as the art of living. Students meditate, thus listening inwardly for guidance, and practice poses, learning to move through asanas with a creativity and attention to the breath, their body’s limits and energy lines. Drawing on 40 years of experience, Erich will help students of all levels develop deeper levels of self¬-trust – and in this approach, he remains one of the best teachers ever. It is an influence acknowledged by Elena Brower, a new teacher to Parrot Cay who from 25th to 31st October will lead a retreat entitled ‘Heal and Fortify: Body and Soul’.
Elena’s style is ideal for those who are new to Yoga, or for those who are seeking a fresh perspective. Her empathetic, honest method of teaching offers appropriately challenging, contemplative practices to refocus attention and thus strengthen each student’s sense of self, and the deeper spirituality and goodness, which exist in all of us. In the twice daily classes, Elena will explore postures, meditation and breath work with subtle alignment cues and carefully selected practices.
Elena, a certified Anusara teacher who seven years ago opened Virayoga in New York, has frequently featured in the New York Times and Yoga Journal. She produced one of the first ever modern audio CD yoga practices in 2000, entitled Vinyasa Yoga, and is the featured teacher for the Element Yoga for Beginners DVD series. Recently she published her first limited edition book entitled Alchemy, A Glossary.
All Parrot Cay’s retreats include six nights of accommodation and five days of Yoga instruction, airport transfers, daily lunch and dinner from a specially prepared COMO Shambhala Retreat Menu (beverages not included), and a full American breakfast. Prices start at US$5,681 in a Garden Room for single occupancy, or US$8,669 for double occupancy. For further details please contact parrotcay@comoshambhala.bz.

QATAR AIRWAYS INTRODUCES ‘ECO’ INFLIGHT MEALS FOR ECONOMY CLASSES
Hong Kong – Qatar Airways has launched an innovative Economy Class inflight-service on all flights operating to and from the UK. The revamped concept, which sees all onboard meals served in a new presentation style using recyclable materials, is aimed not only helping the environment by reducing the airline’s carbon footprint but enhancing customers flying experience.
It is a well-documented fact that the way in which food is presented influences not only whether it is enjoyed but also the way it tastes. The new-look colourful meal tray components offer passengers in Economy a whole new take on food presentation that will take them on a wonderful culinary journey and whilst being ‘eco-friendly’.
With see through trays, bright meal cartons and cutlery packs, as well as a personal table mat in a variety of different colours, Qatar Airways envisages onboard mealtimes being extremely well-received due to the attractive new style in which the food is set.
Given the environmental issues and concerns that are paramount in the travel industry today, the Five Star Carrier’s new light-weight trays and the disposable mugs and boxes are 99% recyclable, offering a more eco-friendly way to serve inflight meals than most airlines.
For the main meals of lunch and dinner and, in keeping with the airline’s Five Star Arabic hospitality, each tray will offer a flavour of Arabia with a regional dressing or dip, such as humus, to serve with the fresh salad starter accompanied by Arabic bread.
Passengers will be given a choice of three delicious main courses, including a lighter option for the more health conscious.
Malaysian chicken curry, fish and fennel pot pie and Indian style kadi pakora are among the selection of mouth-watering main meals.
In addition to fresh fruit, a healthy yoghurt and croissant with preserves, Economy passengers travelling at breakfast time will be able to choose from two hot dishes such as Zucchini and Majoran Fritatta with Cherry tomatoes or Apple and Cinnamon crepe with maple syrup and berry garnish.
Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said: “Over the years, scientific research has demonstrated that food presentation makes an enormous contribution to the enjoyment of a meal. With this in mind, our new-look meal trays are guaranteed to satisfy passenger taste-buds across the Economy Class cabin.
“Qatar Airways prides itself on offering a superior service, no matter what cabin class our passengers are travelling in. This new tray concept will ensure that our valued Economy Class passengers continue to not only enjoy high quality food and drink but also, that their palate is satisfied by the visual appearance of what they are eating.”
Following the introduction of this new tray service on flights between Doha and London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester, Qatar Airways plans to roll out the concept across the remainder of its international network over the next few months.

Florence’s Historic ‘Il Salviatino’ to Re-open as Luxury Villa Retreat
(Hong Kong, February 10, 2009) – One of Florence’s finest Renaissance villas is set to open as a luxury all-suite hotel in May this year, following a multi million dollar restoration.
Located in the hillside town of Fiesole on the outskirts of Florence, this former 15th century palazzo is being transformed into a magnificent luxury villa retreat by Italian hotel development and management company, MPg and renowned Italian architect Luciano Maria Colombo. This coveted location, with views of the famous Florence skyline is just moments from the city, yet quietly secluded within the beautiful Tuscan hills.
Work is now in progress on renovation of the entire villa and its adjoining buildings and garden which will be unveiled when Il Salviatino re-opens on May 13th 2009.
Il Salviatino, which dates back to 1320 and was later transformed into a palace for Florentine aristocracy, has been reborn following a two year conversion and restoration. No expense has been spared in recreating this historic masterpiece which will feature a daring combination of contemporary design and luxury with the sense of history and culture of 18th and 19th century Italy.
The luxury villa (www.salviatino.com) will feature 62 large suites all with breathtaking views. Guests can expect the finest linens, rich buttery Florentine leathers and other luxurious furnishings in warm comforting colours. A fine collection of Renaissance art is a highlight of the villa and its gardens.
The hands of local artisans have unearthed historic treasures from the villa’s heyday, from intricate networks of ancient pathways to elaborate frescoes freed from behind false ceilings. With careful devotion and skill, experts are restoring the villa and grounds to its former glory. Centuries old mosaics are revived, and elegant glass houses emerge from the overgrown gardens.
Working closely with architect Luciano Maria Colombo, renowned for his work with great theatres throughout Italy, the company responsible for this restoration project is MPg, an Italian based hotel development and management company founded by veteran international hotelier Marcello Pigozzo, whose core values of innovation and work ethic are joined by a clear model of hospitality based on absolute employee empowerment.
Staff of Il Salviatino will undergo a 3 month training programme ahead of the opening and will be empowered to provide a level of service based on initiative and anticipation of guests’ needs.
“Our Service Ambassadors will be committed to creating a hospitality experience that is unrivalled in Italy with personalised service for each room.” said Mr. Pigozzo.
Secreted within sloping gardens, a Devarana spa will offer guests a holistic taste of the East. Deverana, meaning ‘garden of heaven’ in Thai Sanskrit, will feature a menu of ancient eastern practices by skilled Thai therapists.

How do you create an individual, contemporary and calm space?

(Hong Kong, 12 February 2009) Overlooking the sparkling waters of the Andaman Sea, SALA Phuket has a unique, calm and contemporary look courtesy of the Department of ARCHITECTURE Co. Ltd.
Design partners Amata Luphaiboon and Twitee Vajrabhaya received the Silver Medal for Siamese Architects for their design at SALA Phuket, here they share their insight:
Age old techniques – “Reinterpreting local skills and crafts such as the use of wood-carving, stuccowork and painted cement tiles which is typical of Sino-Portuguese architecture and seen in the heritage of the buildings in the old town, Phuket gives SALA Phuket an individual look.”
Colour – “The resort is casual and relaxing and the white colour scheme gives a light and airy feeling balanced with subtle grey tones that add a modern twist. Blacks and reds were used to differentiate between areas. The reception area is the guest’s first impression of SALA Phuket, so we wanted to make this area a little more exciting with a brighter colour scheme.”
Courtyards – “The character of the SALA spa lies in its multiple courtyard experience, with each courtyard having its own mood. There is also a misty walkway courtyard, where the passage through the mist and water provides an ethereal and mysterious experience – it’s extremely relaxing.”
Open air living – “Open air living was accentuated throughout the resort. Within each villa, interior and exterior spaces seamlessly blend bedroom, bathroom, living space, pool and landscape into one continuous living experience.”
Water – “We wanted the two pool areas to be relaxing, casual and fun, so we included three distinct areas with Jacuzzi seats, a bubble bed and a kid’s pool. Water is also used to heighten the dining experience, on the rooftop the restaurant guests dine surrounded by water with seats sunken into the water’s surface, making diners feel as though they are floating on islands above the sea.”
About SALA Resorts and Spas
SALA Phuket was opened in 2007 by Thailand’s home grown hospitality company, SALA Resorts and Spas, which also operates SALA Samui. The Six Senses Hideaway in Koh Samui is also a SALA resort.
The resort features 79 luxurious villas and suites, 63 with their own spacious private pools. Both the Resort and the SALA Spa have already been selected as one of just a handful of top new hotels and resorts worldwide featured in the prestigious Condé Nast Traveler “Hot List” 2008.

THE SPA AT MANDARIN ORIENTAL, MIAMI RECEIVES COVETED FIVE STARS FROM MOBIL TRAVEL GUIDE
Hong Kong, 30 January 2009 – The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Miami has been awarded the prestigious Mobil Travel Guide Five-Star Award. The holistic spa is the only spa in Florida and one of eight spas in the United States to earn the industry’s most distinguished spa award.
“This award is testimony to the continued ability of our spa team to exceed guests expectations, and create memorable and lasting spa experiences, said Osa Mallo, Spa Director. “We feel very proud and honored to receive this recognition.”
Since 1958, Mobil Travel Guide’s ratings process has been most rigorous and comprehensive in the industry. Evaluations are based on more than 750 standardized criteria for hotels, more than 250 for restaurants and more recently 450 different criteria for spas. The process begins with a facility inspection that considers every aspect of the property, including its overall cleanliness, condition and location. To achieve Mobil Travel Guide Five-Star status, properties must exceed Mobil Travel Guide’s bar-setting service standards, which are determined through an unannounced, undercover service evaluation conducted by Mobil Travel Guide’s expert inspectors.
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Miami is a three-level sanctuary located at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental, Miami hotel. Adopting a different approach to the traditional spa experience, The Spa offers a series of innovative and restorative treatments inspired by the elements of nature, and the ancient traditions of Chinese, Ayurvedic, European, Balinese and Thai cultures. The 15,000-square-foot spa features 17 private treatment rooms that each use textures such as bamboo, rice paper, glass and natural linens to achieve a harmonious and balanced design. Six stunning suites, located on the top floor of the spa, offer the ultimate spa experience.
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is the award-winning owner and operator of some of the world's most prestigious hotels and resorts. Mandarin Oriental now operates, or has under development, 41 hotels representing over 10,000 rooms in 24 countries, with 16 hotels in Asia, 15 in The Americas and 10 in Europe and North Africa.
