The Upper House, Swire Hotels’ First Property in Hong Kong, Opens its Doors

(Hong Kong, 2 October, 2009) The highly anticipated launch of The Upper House took place in Hong Kong today with an opening ceremony including traditional ribbon cutting and lion dance attended by senior Swire Properties management.

In attendance were Mr Martin Cubbon, Chief Executive of Swire Properties; Mr Guy Bradley, Director and General Manager of Swire Properties; Mr Brian Williams, Managing Director of Swire Properties Hotel Holdings Limited; Mr Dean Winter, General Manger of The Upper House; Mr Jolyon Culbertson, Director and General Manager of Swire Properties and Mr Chris Heywood, Senior Portfolio Manager of Swire Properties.

The launch follows widespread acclaim for Swire Hotels’ first property, The Opposite House in Bejing and leads the way in Hong Kong for EAST, a lifestyle business hotel, opening in January 2010.

For the first 90 days, an exclusive ‘two nights-for-one’ offer is available at The Upper House with rates starting from HK$3,388 for a 730sq ft Island View Studio 70.

With stylish design from renowned Hong Kong designer Andre Fu of AFSO, the hotel offers 117 rooms beginning at 730sq ft – the largest in Hong Kong, all featuring scenic harbour or island views, including 21 suites and 2 penthouses.

Café Gray Deluxe, a 21st century ‘grand café’ located on Level 49 overlooking Victoria Harbour, marks the return of celebrated chef Gray Kunz to Hong Kong and serves modern European classics throughout the day. The vibrant restaurant is highlighted by a 14-metre long open kitchen and equally long bar and is set to become a long awaited addition to the Hong Kong dining scene.

Also on the Level 49, the sky lounge offers panoramic views, a working fireplace and comfortable sofa areas for guests to enjoy. With complimentary wireless internet available throughout the hotel, the lounge is the ideal place for guests to catch up with online news, e-mails or simply kick-back and enjoy a game of backgammon with fellow guests.

The outdoor lawn on Level 6 provides a unique urban retreat with an area for drinks and relaxation under the Hong Kong skyline.

In keeping with the hotel’s principles to reduce guests’ ‘carbon footprints’ whilst remaining connected at all times, the hotel’s energy saving Lexus RX450H hybrid cars are equipped with complimentary WiFi on board, ideal for business and leisure travellers on the move.

The name, ‘The Upper House’, is derived from the design philosophy of an upward journey from Queensway towards Pacific Place, elevating into a serene house above the bustling city.
