SHANGHAI’S ‘1933’ COMES TO LIFE AS TOP NAME TENANTS MOVE IN

(Shanghai, October 28th, 2008) – Global communications leader Omnicom, cutting-edge US brand American Apparel and IT and design giant Apple are among the latest high profile companies to move in to 1933 - Shanghai’s exciting new lifestyle complex in historic Hongkou, just north of the Bund.

Opening in stages on the site of a former abattoir and derelict factory dating back to the 1930’s, the complex has been immaculately restored to its former art deco glory at a cost of RMB100 million.

1933 is conceived as a new commercial hub for creative industries, including office space and design studios, shops, restaurants, bars and clubs, artists’ guilds, galleries, learning space and educational institutions.

It is also making a name for itself as the city’s most sought-after venue for high profile events, featuring spacious public areas for exhibitions and events including a round theatre.

1933’s newest tenant, Omnicom subsidiaries Unisono and POP Monitor, will occupy a 3,650 m2 space with a team of some 250 staff in its first China office.

Managing Director Mr. Litjens said: “We love the location, the look & feel, and concept of 1933. We look forward to having 1933’s creativity and various offerings as part of our daily professional life. We look forward to adding to this cultural project.”

American Apparel, known for its ethical fair trade and fashionable designs created in downtown LA, has opened a 295 m2 Shanghai flagship store on the ground floor.

The brand's resident director in China, Wei Su, is an admirer of 1933’s urban regeneration, design and architectural concept, believing it compliments their urban yet sophisticated branding.

“1933 was the perfect answer for us. Hongkou is an area on the way up. It represents what the old central market was in Paris twenty years ago, the meatpacking district in New York was 10 years ago, and the new industrial areas of London today, that is, a transformation of urban uses to a more intense, modern and inclusive pedestrian oriented use,” he said.

IT and design giant Apple is also scheduled to open a store in 1933.

Paul Liu, Chairman of Axons Concepts, developer and visionary behind 1933, said: “As a worldwide iconic brand that represents a dynamic, modern and design orientated audience, Apple is an ideal tenant for 1933. We share the same ethos in style, innovation and involvement in the community.”

“By coming to 1933, American Apparel and Apple are proving that leading edge brands define themselves rather than letting others define them. “

Other new tenants include the iconic Shanghai restaurant group Jade Garden, which opened earlier this month in 1615m2 area of space on the 3rd floor. Jade Garden is renowned for its innovative "all-new interpretation of Shanghainese cuisine" and is the first dining venue at the historic enclave.

Luxury eyewear brand Eyedonist recently opened their China flagship store at 1933 and the Ferrari Owners Club for China's 600 Ferrari owners is also now based at 1933.

BAROSSA VOTED ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP 10

(Hong Kong, 27 October 2008) – Barossa has been named one of the world’s top 10 wine destinations by the world’s largest online travel community, TripAdvisor.

The iconic South Australian wine region was the only Australian destination to make it onto the prestigious list, alongside European regions such as Bordeaux and Tuscany.

Tourism Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says the listing is significant because it was based not just on TripAdvisor editors’ opinions, but also on Barossa’s popularity with travelers.

“The TripAdvisor website is home to more than 15 million reviews of holiday destinations and products written by real travelers who want to share their experiences with others,” she says.

“South Australia, and in particular the Barossa, is obviously being highly praised by those who have visited here for a holiday.

“The Internet is the place where more and more travelers are researching their holidays, and its importance as a tool to spread the word about visiting South Australia cannot be underestimated.”

In its list of the world’s top 10 wine destinations, TripAdvisor praised Barossa as “this scenic region in South Australia is highly regarded for its Shiraz and its other robust varieties of red wine. Characterized by its visibly rich German heritage, along with its rolling, vine-covered hills, Barossa Valley is a uniquely beautiful destination for sightseers and wine connoisseurs alike.”

Minister Lomax-Smith says the Barossa is an important drawcard for attracting Australian and international tourists to South Australia.

“The South Australian Government is committed to marketing the region through the South Australian Tourism Commission and Tourism Barossa,” Dr Lomax-Smith says.

During the year to June 2008, 195,000 visitors spent 581,000 nights in Barossa, while 785,000 domestic day-trippers also visited the region during the same period.

“The South Australian Government will continue to promote Barossa’s unique culture, heritage and acclaimed wine to the world.

“Being named as one of the world’s top 10 wine destinations shows just how marketable the region is as a tourist destination,” Minister Lomax-Smith says.

Capella Singapore Commissions the World’s Best Designers, Artists and Wellness Experts for March 2009 Opening

SINGAPORE (October 23, 2008) – Singapore’s tranquil Sentosa Island has become a point of convergence for some of the world’s most admired designers and respected hospitality experts. Capella Singapore, a hotel opening March 2009, will offer the best in class for the most discerning travellers, integrating the know-how of the world’s leading experts. The result will be a truly global collaboration, featuring the works of London architects, Japanese interior designers, San Francisco artists and wellness specialists from Stockholm, to name a few. Ultimately, Capella Singapore will raise the bar of excellence, offering a rare, world-class experience.
Architecture:
Based in London, Pritzker Architect Prize Laureate Lord Norman Foster, co-founder of the famed architecture firm Foster + Partners, led the masterful restoration of Tanah Merah, two colonial buildings from the 1880s, which form the centrepiece for Capella Singapore. Pairing the old with the new, Foster + Partners has also designed the hotel’s 111 guestrooms around Tanah Merah – what will be the largest hotel accommodations in Singapore – blending traditional Asian design with contemporary Western influences. It is this same thoughtful design philosophy that has inspired the seamless integration of architectural elements with Sentosa Island’s natural topography, allowing new structures to follow the contours of the terrain to ensure a balance with nature. Lord Foster commented, “Capella Singapore is seamlessly integrated with the beauty of its natural setting and the three remarkable historic buildings on the site. Our design fuses the contemporary with the historic, and the built elements with the tropical forest.” In addition to Capella Singapore, Foster + Partners’ portfolio includes the world’s largest airport terminal in Beijing, Hearst Headquarters in New York City and the German Parliament in the Reichstag, Berlin.

Interior Design:
Leading interior design for Capella Singapore is Jaya Ibrahim. Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, Ibrahim is considered among the world’s foremost interior designers. Utilizing a neutral color palate for Capella Singapore’s elegant interiors, Ibrahim brings his great vision and experience to Sentosa Island’s latest masterpiece, bringing the local Singaporean culture to life. Guests will find a setting that is both stylish and sophisticated – an oasis that speaks to the region and its unique sense of place. Ibrahim noted, “Capella Singapore is set in the ultimate tropical locale, enhanced by architecture that plays upon the design theme of contrasting the past and the present in a surprising manner. The interior design has been crafted as a backdrop for visitors to sit, to move, to lie down with ease and with the constant awareness of this tropical setting, highlighting the contrast of old and new.” His latest project is the Aman at Summer Palace, Beijing. Past works include The Nam Hai in Vietnam, The Dharmawangsa in Jakarta, The Setai, Miami Beach, The Chedi Milan in Italy, The Legian and The Four Seasons Jimbaran Estates in Bali.
Hong Kong-based Andre Fu, co-founder of the famed architecture firm AFSO, leads the interior design for Cassia, Capella Singapore’s Chinese fine-dining restaurant. Named for the Asian spice of the cinnamon family, Cassia has been designed to create an ambience both welcoming and seductive, to complement the restaurant’s reinterpretation of traditional Chinese cuisine within the context of its colonial-era Tanah Merah setting. A colour palette of lilac, mineral grey, dark Chinese lacquer and bronze are weaved throughout the restaurant, and noteworthy decorative elements include butterfly-inspired lamps made of engraved bronze that create an ethereal sense of place. An open staircase features a large-scale installation commissioned by Japanese artist, Tomoko Sawada, and leads to an alluring water feature and long architectural wall where guests can meander before entering the dining room. For a more intimate experience, two semi-private and one private dining room have also been created, seating six and 12, respectively. Here guests will find fabric-laminated glass dividers that create an alluring silhouette, with walls featuring bespoke silver-foiled wallpaper and hand-painted magnolia flowers. For an al fresco setting, diners on the outdoor colonnade gallery enjoy views of Capella Singapore’s cascading lawns. Fu noted, “Capella Singapore seamlessly marries a rich colonial heritage with sophisticated contemporary design; this has greatly inspired us in our re-interpretation of the authentic Chinese fine dining experience in a deeply rooted, yet distinctly sensuous and lush setting." Past projects have included Hong Kong’s Azure Restaurant & Lounge and Shanghai’s Zenterstage.
Yasuhiro Koichi, co-founder of Tokyo-based Design Studio SPIN, has been charged with interior design for The Knolls, Capella Singapore’s all-day dining restaurant and bar lounge. Inspired by the fusion of Capella Singapore’s classic and modern design, Koichi has planned The Knolls in an Asian-colonial style, integrating antique and contemporary elements to create an intimate oasis. Cosy, inviting seating areas will offer guests a sense of comfort and privacy. And thoughtful use of lighting will transition The Knolls’ setting from day to night, presenting an evolving sense of space. Koichi commented, "Capella Singapore is a study in contrasts, including its setting in the seclusion of lush rainforest, even as it is located in such proximity to the central business district. At The Knolls, we have extended this theme, offering intimate and inviting private spaces within the restaurant itself." In addition to Capella Singapore, Design Studio SPIN was behind the restaurant at the Nam Hai in Hoi An, Vietnam as well as Nobu in Tokyo.
Landscape Design:
Allen Certon, president, managing director of Belt Collins International in Singapore is at the forefront of Capella Singapore’s landscape design. His vision offers a dramatic juxtaposition to the hotel’s clean-lined, contemporary architecture. At the hotel’s main entrance, lush forest greenery and arching groves of bamboo will greet guests. Within the main hotel courtyard, a combination of plants inspired by the rice terrace landscapes of Southeast Asia will prevail. And Capella Singapore’s landscaping will honour its Sentosa Island location and history; great attention was committed to preserve the five heritage trees native to the property, and plants including Beetle Nut and Livistona Palms have been used to complement the regions historic colonial architecture. Greenery will also serve as an extension of the hotel’s villas, with exotic rainforest plants offering privacy between accommodations. Additional plantings include frangipani trees, birds nest ferns and indigenous orchids. In total, Capella Singapore will feature 60 different tree species, and the hotel grounds will include over 5,000 trees, 2,000 palms, 700 bamboo, 40,000 ferns, 125,000 shrubs, and nearly 250,000 ground covers.
Health and Wellness:
Developed by Swedish-based spa company, Raison d’Etre, the Auriga Spa and Wellness Centre’s design concept and signature treatments utilize the varying energies of the lunar cycle to relax, restore and realign the mind, body and spirit. Capella Singapore offers guests four signature Auriga services, each inspired by the moon’s phases, and complemented by traditional Asian therapies. Destination-inspired spa experiences will also be a focus of the Auriga menu, incorporating regional products, fruits and herbs to offer guests of Capella Singapore a true sense of place. Services are enjoyed within the 8,000 square foot oasis, featuring nine experience rooms, including three suites with shower and bath, separate steam shower and dressing area. Each experience room features an enticing indoor/outdoor design, with private outdoor garden for lounging alongside a tranquil lily pond. Capella Singapore’s unique oasis was inspired by Raison d’Etre, and its portfolio includes Anassa in Paphos, Cyprus and Four Seasons, Doha, Qatar.
Art:
New York City’s Elizabeth Weiner serves as art consultant for Capella Singapore. With more than 20 years of experience, Weiner’s keen eye has been imperative in the development of the hotel’s burgeoning collection of significant art pieces. Capella Singapore will feature a series of large-scale indoor and outdoor sculptures complemented by intimate pieces, the works of renowned artists from over 15 countries, with strong representation by local Singaporeans. The collection will cross a wide variety of unique mediums, including custom-designed lacquer wall sculptures and free standing stone elements, complemented by more traditional art forms including silk-screens and lithographs. In addition, a world-class sculpture garden will highlight Capella Singapore’s vast space – the largest of any hotel in Singapore.
On the front lawn of Capella Singapore, a steel installation art piece, having a footprint of 6.9m x 4.5m and a height of 3.15m, by sculptor Bernar Venet will offer a visually inspiring welcome for guests. Famous for his monumental structures – a melding of steel and gravity-defying, spiraling curving arcs – French-born Venet was at the forefront of the conceptual art movement of the 1960s and 1970s. His work has been acquired by such noteworthy establishments as the Museums of Modern Art in New York and Paris and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
From the visual masterpieces outside to those indoors, one art piece in particular will frame the hotel’s Ballroom, the first in Singapore to feature a circular glass-dome skylight. The magnificent custom-designed sculpture, the vision of San Francisco-based artist Nikolas Weinstein, will float from the dome’s centre. The sculpture’s shape is circular, comprised of approximately 10,000 clear glass tubes, and echoes the round collar of the skylight under which it sits. Designed to play with the room’s natural light source, the sculpture’s transparency during daytime’s backlight offers a stunning complement to the room’s architecture. During the evening, when the piece is illuminated from beneath, the sculpture will reflect and refract light, causing it to shimmer as guests move within the Ballroom.

Designer Japanese teppanyaki restaurant unveiled at bold new boutique hotel IVY Shanghai

(Shanghai, October 17, 2008) -- Designer Japanese teppanyaki restaurant Kuromastsu has opened at IVY Shanghai, the hip new boutique hotel in a converted 1950s cinema dazzling the city with flamboyant China-pop design and elegant dining.
The signature restaurant brings high-end classic Japanese teppanyaki to newly fashionable Jing’an district, a short stroll from the shopping and business hub of Nanjing West Road.

Tucked away in true Japanese style behind the lobby, the 60-seat restaurant centres around a seven-chef teppanyaki grill serving classic teppanyaki prepared in traditional style using both seasonal local produce and top-quality imported ingredients.
Six different teppanyaki menus include American and Japanese Wagyu beef, abalone, crab, sea urchin and black cod. These are paired with a sophisticated selection of wines, eight types of sake and creative cocktails.
Heading the kitchen is chef Kevin Lee, formerly of Hong Kong’s premier teppanyaki restaurant, Matsubishi.

Kuromastsu also features a 10-seat sushi bar and four multifunctional private rooms seating between 4-12 guests. A Japanese a la carte menu is also available and weekday business set lunch menus will soon be introduced.
Kuromastsu is designed in dark granite with flashes of colour in exotic trims of traditional obi dresses.

IVY Shanghai also includes a whimsical private coffee bar and wifi lounge in a sky lit atrium on the second floor, where the cinema's original screen once stood.
The hotel’s bold styling by American-French designer Dillon Garris vamps up the interplay of ancient and modern Chinese design with funky lipstick-red lattice screens, grey brick walls reminiscent of Shanghai lanes and China pop art.

The 46-room IVY Shanghai is the first mainland China hotel by CHI - International, a luxury Asian hotel management firm that operates unique resorts and serviced apartments throughout Hong Kong and Fiji.

It occupies the heritage cinema in the newly hip factory-turned-residential area of Jing’an district, a mere 15-minute walk from Nanjing West Road.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Understanding Uma: Uma means ‘Living House’ in Bahasa, the Indonesian national language. Developed by COMO Hotels and Resorts, Uma properties are located in unspoilt, inland locations. They are also ecologically aware. Every aspect of an Uma resort is infused with indigenous attributes, from design to cuisine to local staff knowledge. The intention is to immerse guests in the textural richness of the resort’s carefully chosen region – from culture to religion and landscape – offering the dual experience of escape and adventure. This is complemented by the holistic core of the COMO Shambhala philosophy, featuring Yoga and Asian-inspired therapies. Uma Paro’s sister resort, Uma Ubud, is located in Bali.

Understanding COMO Hotels and Resorts: COMO Hotels and Resorts’ first property opened in 1991 – the Halkin in London’s Belgravia. The winning combination of smooth and accurate service, healthy Michelin-starred food and contemporary, understated style has since led to the creation of further properties, each different from the other while respecting COMO’s core commitments – to indulge every guest’s sense of respite, be it on a private island or a city hotel in the world’s most dynamic capitals. Currently the COMO portfolio consists of two properties in London: the Halkin and Metropolitan, London. The resort product launched in 1998 with Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos. In 2002, Cocoa Island in the Maldives was born, followed in 2003 by the Metropolitan, Bangkok. In early 2004, COMO Hotels and Resorts assumed management of Begawan Giri Estate in Bali. That same year saw the opening of Uma Paro, Bhutan, and Uma Ubud, Bali. In 2005, Begawan Giri was relaunched with substantial new facilities as a top-end residential wellness retreat called COMO Shambhala Estate at Begawan Giri.

Understanding COMO Shambhala: COMO Shambhala is a health concept that has been developed in line with Shambhala’s meaning (Sanskrit for ‘peace’) manifested as centres of wellbeing at all COMO Hotels and Resorts. These include COMO’s city hotels spas, known as COMO Shambhala Urban Escapes, as well as COMO Shambhala Retreats at the company’s private islands and Uma resorts. It is a consultative rather than prescriptive approach which allows consultants to respond to guests on a one-by-one, day-by-day basis. Treatments range from Yoga to shiatsu to Ayurvedic detox programmes. They distil the best of ancient Asian traditions and, where appropriate, older techniques are combined with Western advances. Bodywork is also an essential element of the COMO Shambhala experience. At all properties, Yoga facilities are available. Guests can partake in week-long programs led by the world’s best teachers. In addition, COMO Shambhala maintains on-going relationships with key health professionals, and in 2006, created a Board of Advisors made up of experts in holistic health to help direct the company’s evolution; members include Dr Robert Thurman, Rodney Yee and Donna Karan. COMO Shambhala cuisine, available at select properties, focuses on energising and organic foodstuffs. An emphasis on raw ingredients is combined with pan-Asian influences, with menus overseen by the company’s Executive Chef, Amanda Gale. COMO Shambhala also produces a range of skin and bodycare products, COMO Shambhala At Home, made from all-natural ingredients. COMO Shambhala Active Living is the company’s resort and activewear line, launched in 2007.

WORLDHOTELS’ Brøchner Hotels Becomes World’s First Carbon Neutral Hotel Group

(Hong Kong, October 14, 2008) — Brøchner Hotels in Copenhagen, the WORLDHOTELS affiliated Danish hotel group has become the world's first “carbon neutral” hotel group.

The family-owned Danish group comprises four hotels that have set a global benchmark as the first to become 100 per cent climate-neutral.

They are the Hotel Kong Arthur, Ibsens Hotel, Hotel Danmark and the famous Hotel Fox, nominated several times for best idea, best design, best innovation and more.

"A great number of major international hotel chains are working actively on measures to reduce energy and climate impact with ambitious goals of becoming climate neutral one day. However, we are actually -- the first chain in the world - as confirmed by the International Hotel and Restaurant Association - which has actually achieved it,” said co-owner and General Manager, Kirsten Brøchner.

The Brøchner Hotels' CO2 neutrality has been achieved via a 5-step Climate Plan that includes among others acquisition and destruction of quotas through the European system for trade with CO2 quotas. The trade-off equalled the hotel chain's entire CO2 emission in 2007 and 2008.

Consequently, the total limit for CO2 emission in the EU has been lowered and quota prices forced up, pressurizing energy companies and the industry to find new and more climate-friendly ways to produce energy.

Kirsten Brøchner’s motivation behind the hotel chain's climate move is “primarily a wish to take personal responsibility for solving global climate problems”.

Brøchner Hotels hopes to persuade other hotels to join the global climate struggle.

Interested groups and individual hotels can learn more from the hotel group’s website: www.co2neutral-hotels.com.

With 500 outstanding hotels in 300 destinations, across 70 countries, WORLDHOTELS is the most established Europe-based global marketing and distribution network for independent hotels and regional hotel brands, with a strong emphasis on properties with character and distinction.

WORLDHOTELS was recently voted 'Best Independent Hospitality Organization' in the TravelWeekly (Asia) 2008 Awards.
